MSI GT73VR 7RF Titan Pro – high-end gaming notebook with GeForce GTX 1080 and Core i7-7820HK
With dimensions of 428 x 287 x 49 mm and a weight of 4.1 kg, the MSI GT73VR 7RF Titan Pro notebook belongs to “desktop replacement” models, it is problematic to carry around every day. Thickness and weight speak for themselves. The quality of the shell is excellent. If several years ago MSI in this respect lagged behind its competitors, today the company significantly strengthened its position. The body is made of conscience, uneven gaps or sharp edges, we did not find, despite the chosen mixture of plastic and aluminum. The bottom of the body is made of plastic, from above (the display cover and the upper part of the main body) – from textured aluminum.
The design of the case can be called simple. Monotone black coloring is broken except that two red stripes on the cover with LED-backlight and the manufacturer’s logo. Under the hinge of the display at the rear, you can see the large cooling holes of the Cooler Boost Titan cooling system. In general, we did not have any complaints about the quality of design and design, except that the 17.3 “loop could be more rigid.
The advantages include excellent equipment. And this applies not only to the components inside the notebook case. MSI has equipped the notebook with Cooler Boost Titan technology, which provides low temperatures and quiet operation, despite the powerful components. The cooling system consists of two separate coolers for the processor and video card. In total, the laptop has two fans and ten heat pipes
It was not without the game keyboard with RGB-backlight, developed in conjunction with SteelSeries. The keyboard is divided into three areas of illumination, for each one you can choose your own color. The backlight brightness can be adjusted in several steps, various effects are available. The keyboard backlight can be customized through the proprietary Dragon Center application, to which we will return a little later. The keys have a decent size of 15 x 15 mm, the distance between them is about 3 mm. The key stroke is average, tactile feedback is good. On the keyboard MSI GT73VR 7RF Titan Pro you can comfortably type even long texts. A separate digital block is provided for dialing the numbers, although it has fewer keys. But the layout is not all right. MSI has moved some keys, for example, the same Windows, to the right. However, you can get used to it. To the right of the keyboard, MSI added several function buttons. They allow, for example, to set the maximum capacity of the cooling system with one click. You can also run the XSplit Gamecaster utility for streaming games or select the backlight mode.
Very good touch pad
We had no complaints about the touch pad either. It has a pretty decent size of 110 x 66 mm, multi-touch gestures are supported, like scrolling with two fingers in the browser or increasing / decreasing the finger growth / reduction. Gestures are recognized perfectly. But because of the rubber coating the finger slides on the surface is not as good as it would be desirable. Note the separate right and left mouse buttons. The trigger point is probed well.
After turning on the laptop around the touchpad, a red bezel lights up. The mouse buttons are also separated by a backlight from the main surface of the touchpad.
On the interfaces MSI GT73VR 7RF Titan Pro offers everything you need a demanding gamer. In the right panel we get two USB 3.1 interfaces of the Type A Gen 1 standard. Next, MSI has installed an SD memory card slot. To the right you can see the ventilation holes of the cooling system.
From the bottom of the laptop are a lot of ventilation holes. The lattice of some of them is painted red instead of black, which also introduces a variety in monotonous design. Unfortunately, the bottom does not provide a door for a quick replacement of an SSD or a 2.5 “hard drive, but the bottom panel can be removed quite easily, as well as a subwoofer that amplifies low frequencies from below.
Excellent cooling system
The notebook MSI GT73VR 7RF Titan Pro can see numerous ventilation openings on both sides of the case and from below, as well as on the rear panel. Between the last MSI has installed video outputs HDMI and mini-DisplayPort, as well as a Gigabit LAN socket. There is also a USB Type C USB 3.1 Gen 2 port with support for Thunderbolt 3.
Nearby you can see the connection socket for an external power supply with a power of 330 watts. The layout of the interfaces can be called thoughtful. The game mouse and the right-hander, and the left-hander can connect so that the cable does not interfere.
On the case of MSI GT73VR 7RF Titan Pro, we had no complaints. Below we will look at hardware stuffing and cooling system.
We got the flagship MSI GT73VR 7RF Titan Pro, in which MSI installed a new processor Kaby Lake. Until now, only Intel Core i7-7700HQ has been in our test lab, so it will be interesting to look at the results of Intel Core i7-7820HK. Thanks to the unlocked multiplier, the processor can be easily overclocked. But the Taiwanese manufacturer did not add factory overclocking, the user will be able to overclock the CPU independently. The four Kaby Lake processor cores operate at a base frequency of 2.9 GHz, which can increase to 3.9 GHz thanks to Turbo Boost. The Hyper-Threading function allows each core to execute two threads simultaneously, which gives eight logical cores. MSI GT73VR TITAN PRO Review 2018

The processor is equipped with 8 MB of L3 cache, the second level cache is 1 MB, and each core contains 32 KB of L1 cache for instructions and data. The maximum power consumption of Intel, as in the case of the Skylake processor, indicates a level of 45 watts. In practice, we confirm this level. The Intel Core i7-7820HK is manufactured using a 14-nm process technology.
To the memory controller of the processor, MSI connected two DDR4 memory slots at a frequency of 2.400 MHz, that is, the memory operates in the optimal two-channel mode. MSI installed two 16 GB slots out of four possible, giving a total of 32 GB. The memory bandwidth of the MSI GT73VR 7RF Titan Pro is a decent 28.58 GB / s, which is slightly higher than other notebooks of this class of price and performance. The processor Intel Core i7-7820HK in the test laptop showed in the test 7-Zip performance slightly less than 22.000 MIPS, which is noticeably higher than other game models. In two Cinebench tests, the flagship of Kaby Lake showed a level of 8.38 and 761 points, which exceeds the result of the HQ processor by a good 100 points.
MSI installed two 256-GB SSDs in M.2 slots. The drives are connected via NVMe protocol and are integrated into a RAID array. As a result, we get a very decent level of reading performance of 3.252 MB / s. By recording, the speed is also high – 2.607 MB / s. The operating system is loaded in seconds, games and applications are launched almost instantly. In addition to the pre-installed Windows 10 Home and the main programs, you can install several games on the 512-GB array. To store user files there is an additional 2.5-inch hard disk at 7,200 rpm. It operates at a read / write speed of about 107 MB / s, which is much lower than the SSD array. However, for storage of the library of games and multimedia files, performance is quite enough.
The gaming laptop of this class of price and performance should be equipped with a powerful video card. MSI offers configurations of GT73VR Titan Pro with two GeForce GTX 1070 or one GTX 1080. We got a test configuration with a GeForce GTX 1080 graphics card, this model was introduced in August 2016, it corresponds to a desktop video card 1: 1. We get the same GPU GP104, as in the desktop version there are 2.560 stream processors, the chip contains about 7.2 billion transistors. Stream processors are combined into four Clusters of the Processing Processing Cluster (GPC), each of them contains five multiprocessors Streaming Multiprocessors (SMM) with 128 stream processors. Each cluster contains eight texture blocks, as a result, we get 160 TMUs for the GPU GP104.
As for memory, the video card contains 8 GB of GDDR5X, connected via a 256-bit bus. The memory frequency is 1.251 MHz, the throughput is 320 GB / s. Of course, the clock speeds of the mobile GPU are inferior to the desktop version, so as not to go beyond the limits of TDP. At the desktop video card the base frequency is 1.607 MHz, in the Boost mode – 1.733 MHz. The mobile version – 1.582 MHz or 1.771 MHz. In addition, the clock speeds remain at a high level for a shorter time than the desktop version. The GPU GP104 is manufactured using the 16-nm FinFET process technology at the TSMC plants. In our test sample, clock frequencies in practice reached almost 1.800 MHz.
Settings MSI GT73VR 7RF Titan Pro can be changed through the proprietary utility Dragon Center. You can not only adjust the backlight of the SteelSeries keyboard, but also set the mode of the fans, activate the power saving functions or Nahimic Audio Enhancer. Through the utility you can run your favorite applications, and also read the most important operating parameters of the laptop. Including the temperature of the video card and processor, the load on the CPU and GPU, the speed of the fans and the network bandwidth. Also, MSI offers an annual license for the XSplit Gamecaster streaming application, gamers will certainly be happy. There are not many demonstration and advertising applications, except that trial versions of Microsoft Office 365 and antivirus are preinstalled. MSI GT73VR TITAN PRO Review 2018
The laptop is equipped with Rivet Networks Killer DoubleShot technology, which we tested in November 2015 . It is designed to reduce the delays of online games with wireless or wired connection, as well as increase bandwidth. So gamers will be happy.
Low surface temperatures
The laptop MSI GT73VR 7RF Titan Pro we did not encounter any problems with the cooling system, although the Intel Core i7-7820HK processor was heated to 92 ° C. But throttling was not observed, as was the drop in performance. The temperature of the video card NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 was significantly lower, about 81 ° C. Despite the high temperatures of the chips, the surface of the laptop was heated slightly.
We could not find really hot sites. On average, the surface temperature was about 29.4 ° C on the top panel of the main body, on the bottom panel we got, on the average, about 29.7 ° C, which is not much higher. In the hottest area, the temperature was only 32.3 ° C (the third square from below). For other gaming notebooks of this class, the prices and performance of the temperature are usually higher.
But MSI GT73VR 7RF Titan Pro can not be called silent. Of course, under the usual Windows load the laptop worked very quietly – about 33.7 dB (A). But under full load, the noise level increased to 52.8 dB (A). It can not be called annoying, but it is unlikely to endure such a level of noise. However, given the high gaming performance, the noise level can be called normal. Especially since many gamers will still play headphones.
Short battery life
As we expected, far from the outlet laptop MSI GT73VR 7RF Titan Pro does not work long. If many other manufacturers install a 95Wh battery, here we get only 75Wh. What affects the battery life. Under normal office load, the laptop worked for three hours or 185 minutes thanks to efficient energy saving technologies. But with the load on the processor or video card, the battery life is reduced to about one and a half hours. In our tests, we got 74 minutes. Many other gaming laptops show a longer battery life.
Notebook MSI GT73VR 7RF Titan Pro pleased not only with high gaming performance, but also an excellent display. The panel supports a high refresh rate of 120 Hz, due to TN technology the viewing angles are limited, but we get a high level of brightness and uniform backlighting – more than 90%. And the brightness is up to 324 cd / m². That allows you to use your laptop outdoors and in brightly lit rooms. The contrast is also very good – 1.286: 1.
Like most gaming laptops, the display has a bluish tinge. The average color temperature was 7.070 K. Recall that the optimal level is 6.500 K. The resolution of the 17.3 “panel is not the highest – 1.920 x 1.080 pixels, but there will be no problems in the games. Among the gaming functions we note the support for NVIDIA G-Sync technology, in pair with a high refresh rate of 120 Hz, we get an excellent smooth gameplay without jerking and bursting the frame. It seems to us that the high refresh rate and Full-HD resolution are suitable for a gamer better than 4K resolution and the video card will not be loaded much. MSI GT73VR TITAN PRO Review 2018?
We were pleased with the daily performance: thanks to two 256-GB SSD with NVMe connection in the RAID array, the operating system is loaded in seconds, programs and games are launched almost instantly. The 512-GB array is enough for your favorite games, but MSI added a 1-terabyte 2.5 “hard drive.” Note the high-end audio subsystem with a separate subwoofer, the RGB illumination of the SteelSeries gaming keyboard, which showed excellent tactility. The quality of the notebook is excellent, the cooling system is able to cope with its work, although under load it can no longer be called quiet. The drawbacks include a battery: the gaming laptop lasted from 74 to 185 minutes away from the outlet.
The price of the flagship with the panel Full-HD in Europe is 3.500 euros . Quite a lot, but for this class of performance, the price is quite normal. Top-selling gaming laptops of competitors are unlikely to be cheaper.
