A system that quickly turns into a portable PC without a huge loss in performance, packed with the latest interfaces, with an insanely fast and bulk disk subsystem, top components and a quality screen: all this is ASUS G701VI-XS72K, a laptop on the verge of reasonable and only for the elite.
The model belongs to a series of gaming devices ROG, which is currently singled out by the manufacturer as an independent brand. It is worth mentioning separately that this laptop is released in the year of the 10th anniversary of the ROG – it was in 2006 that the first devices with this emblem appeared. Thus, the release of the GX700 is not just a demonstration of technological capabilities, but also a confirmation that gaming is becoming increasingly important for ASUS.
A laptop with an external water cooling system unit (SVO) is delivered in a huge plastic suitcase. Since our specimen was an engineering sample, there were no identification marks on it. It is easy to confuse with the suitcase of the traveler, especially considering the weight – about 25 kg. Packing retail copies will be much more colorful, but it will still be a suitcase that protects the ASUS G701VI-XS72K and the CBO unit from all adversities. All elements are fixed in the nests in a tight foam and fixed with the help of special belts. This “packaging” is not thrown out two weeks after the purchase, as it often happens with simple laptops. Together with the laptop and external cooling unit comes a wired mouse and two power units of different power. Despite the exclusivity of the model, the design of the ASUS G701VI-XS72K is not unique – it looks very similar to the ASUS ROG G752, which, in turn, is an improved version of the popular earlier G751. The ASUS G701VI-XS72K uses slightly different materials, smoothed shapes, reduced thickness and weight, the body color has changed, decorative elements / inserts have been added. The model looks modern, stylish, expensive. And this, in our experience, happens to gaming laptops not always.
The upper part and decorative covers are made of ground aluminum. Several plastic inserts with a red-orange backlight are used. The ROG logo located in the center of the case is also highlighted. In addition to the logo on the ASUS G701VI-XS72K there is also a decoding of the abbreviation ROG, located on the plastic overlay, in the area of the insert “for gold,” an element that should immediately attract attention.
On the left side are two USB 3.0 connectors, a 3.5 mm audio output (with S / PDIF) and an audio input, a SD / SDHC / SDXC memory card reader. On the opposite side there was a place for another USB 3.0 port, network RJ-45, the newest USB 3.1 Type-C and its version with Thunderbolt 3 and video interfaces mini DisplayPort 1.3 and HDMI 2.0. The quality of the materials used in the notebook is very high, but the processing of elements and assembly cause some criticism. It operates in a two-channel mode, using four SO-DIMM-modules from the company Apacer to 16 GB each. When the XMP profile is activated, it is possible to overclock to the level of DDR4-2800 (1400 MHz) with increasing delays and only when the base of the CBO is connected.
The review’s hero is equipped with a 17.3-inch IPS display manufactured by LG Display with a resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels and a 16: 9 aspect ratio. The screen is matte, without a touch layer – the most adequate option available, in our opinion, despite the assurances of marketers that 4K is needed in our day. Separately it is worth noting that the version with a Full HD-screen is characterized by an increased frequency of vertical scanning – 75 Hz. The visual difference in comparison with the standard 60 Hz is acceptable and not essential, but it is.
The ASUS G701VI-XS72K modification uses the 17.3-inch IPS panel LG Display (or, as it was called for a long time, LG Philips) with a resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels, a 16: 9 aspect ratio, without a touch layer. Protective film – matte, anti-glare. The frame of the screen is expected to be large, but for gaming laptops this is the norm.
The resolution used, from our point of view, is optimal for this diagonal and is ideal for the components used in the system. The 4K standard screen will significantly reduce the performance in professional graphics / video applications and games. In addition, you can not escape from the problems with the scaling of graphic elements in the unsuitable for HiDPI-displays software. So before buying it is worth to evaluate all the pros and cons of each option. Also, do not forget about the 75 Hz vertical scan rate of the Full HD instance versus the standard 60 Hz in the 4K version.
The quality of the gradients at the default settings is very decent, but it all spoils the sudden transition from ~ 10%. This is seen not only in specific tests, but also in normal work. After calibration, due to strong edits in the LUT, the situation is seriously changing: a large number of sharp transitions occur in the 10-50% range and visible parasitic tints (violet, dirty yellow).

When creating a load using AIDA64 on the CPU, the processor frequency quickly stops to maintain its previous values, decreasing to 2.6 GHz (below the nominal), and throttling at 25%. When adding a load to the GPU, the processor frequency starts to decrease periodically to 1.7 GHz, and the throttling increases to 50% at the maximum. The built-in cooling system does not cope with similar tasks. True, it is worth noting that when creating a load of real applications (working with photos, video) to achieve such a high temperature and throttling, we failed.
Connecting the docking station seriously affects the results. When loading only the processor, which in this case runs at 4 GHz, its frequency keeps at a maximum throughout the test time. Trotting up to 10-12% was observed only in the first minutes, when the SVO did not reach its maximum efficiency.
Again, we add the load to the GPU and see that even the liquid cooling system can not cope with such powerful components in the small case of the ASUS G701VI-XS72K laptop. The processor frequency after a while starts to decrease periodically to 3.5 GHz, throttling reaches 38%, and the fans of the NWO are howling all the way.
But this is an artificial situation with a maximum synthetic load on all components. Gaming applications and other real-world tasks can not create such a long and constantly high load and do not lead to a similar effect. But nevertheless, in our opinion, the manufacturer should consider options for optimizing the system.

The test results showed that this model was designed specifically for working in conjunction with the SVO. This means that the standard cooling system of the laptop is good only when performing simple, non-demanding hardware resources tasks. With the growth of the same load, and even more so if the user wants to uncover the maximum capabilities of the computer system, the integrated air cooling system can not cope with such a powerful configuration and requires the use of NWS. This laptop does not allow for compromises and resembles a racing car, all systems that work best only at maximum speed.
